A church chair is secondly a chair that is in compliance with any and all legal requirements that are in force in the particular jurisdiction where your church is located. We find that many churches are unaware that when a room reaches a specific number of people occupying it (you will have to contact your local officials to determine this limit for your area) rules can go into effect for your seating. For example, in some areas your chairs may be required to be ”affixed” the floor. In other areas, the ability to effectively connect your chairs to each other may be non-negotiable. The fire-retardant requirements for the fabric and foam that make up a part your chairs may be stricter in some localities than others. The simple truth is that your chairs should be in compliance with those codes in force in your location. Please know again that this truth is not related to the appearance of your church chair. Instead it has everything to do with honoring authority.
After you determine the ideal height for the backrest of your chair, your next concern is making sure your thighs will fit properly on the seat. The average seat depth on any given office chair is typically about 19 inches deep, however, if you are taller most likely this means you have longer legs. Longer legs requires a longer seat to ensure that your thighs will fit properly across the entire length of the seat without a lot of extra room between the back of your knees and the edge of the seat. Some high end chair manufacturers such as ErgoCentric Seating have a special upgrade option that allows the user to choose a longer seat of 21 inches deep. Another great way to solve the problem of having a seat that is too short is to look for chairs that have a seat slider option. A seat slider allows the user to adjust the depth of the chair by pulling up on a lever generally located underneath the front of the seat. When this lever is pulled up, you can then bring the chair forward or back to make the seat either longer or shorter depending on your needs.
”They do this in London and Paris,” Spate told Clausen. ”And it would undoubtedly be good for New York City.” Clausen saw no problem with Spate’s line of thinking, so he readily agreed; albeit without first consulting with the other member of the Park Commission. As a result, Clausen graced Spate with a five-year contract, allowing Spate to place his rocking chairs in all the New York City parks. With the ink still not dry on his contract, Spate immediately ordered 6,000 chairs, costing about $1.50 each. If Spate’s projections were correct, these chairs would earn him an estimated $250-$300 a day.
With the city in a heat-related frenzy, harried people hurried to the city’s parks, which were now ordered by the Park Commission to stay open all night. When people arrived at the parks, they discovered that many of the free benches were no longer there, and the ones that were still present in the parks had been moved into the sun, making them too hot to sit on. However, Spate’s green chairs were sitting nicely in the shade, making them more attractive to the people fighting the stifling heat.
Park Commissioner Clausen tried to defend his actions by telling the press that there were always plenty of free benches for people to sit on, except, of course, on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The New York Tribune pointed out that those were the days with the biggest demand for seats in the parks. As this issue became monumental, Spate became more resolute. He ordered more chairs be placed in Central Park, and also in Madison Square Park, which was across the street from his office. Some people paid to sit, and those that didn’t, were unceremoniously thrown out of the chairs by Spate’s thugs in gray suits.
